Pantone, Colour of the Year

Pantone is the world benchmark in terms of color management and tracking. Indeed, creatives, artists and industrialists around the world use the brand’s famous color charts. The “pantoniers” have thus become almost universal tools of reference and control of color integrity.

Since its creation in 1866, the Pantone company has actively participated in the development of printing techniques. Notably with the creation of the Pantone color system in 1963 and the development of the color separation process, hexachromy, in the 90s.

Pantone color charts now have more than 3,000 referenced colors.
Since 2000, Pantone has selected a color from among these that will become the “color of the year”.
However, it is a color duo that has been put forward in 2021.
This is the second time that there is not one but two colors of the year.
Indeed, in 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue were in the spotlight.

This year’s colors, “Ultimate” gray and bright yellow “Illuminating”, like the choices made in previous years, are full of symbolism.
The neutrality of gray represents serenity and strength while the warmth of yellow encourages positivism and hope.
In view of the difficulties experienced in 2020, we understand that these are the values ​​that Pantone wanted to convey for 2021.

The "color of the year" is chosen by the Pantone Color Institute. It analyzes, from spring, emerging trends in different artistic fields such as fashion, cinema, graphic arts… but also by observing what is happening on social networks, in the street… in short, everything that makes up our daily lives.

For the experts at Pantone, led by Leatrice Eiseman, executive director and international color expert, it is a matter of "capturing the zeitgeist". Pantone is therefore inspired by trends to choose the color which will then become "the trend" to follow for all the graphic industries.
