Furniture and Contemporary Art

Contemporary art cannot leave one indifferent. It is, by its nature, inherently designed to elicit reactions. Unlike so-called classical art, which often obeys established aesthetic standards, contemporary art explores new, sometimes confusing territories, which question our perception of art, society, and ourselves. He plays with conventions, transgresses them, and is part of a constant dialogue with his time.
He pushes the limits of beauty and ugliness, meaning and nonsense. It can provoke strong emotions, ranging from fascination to incomprehension or even rejection. Other times, he moves, capturing truths that we struggle to express otherwise.
In addition, contemporary art draws on the diversity of mediums and techniques, integrating digital, performance, installation, video, and many other forms of expression. This diversity amplifies its impact, because it speaks to varied audiences and manifests itself in multiple contexts, from museums to urban spaces, making art accessible while confronting it with complex realities.

Doris Salcedo is a Colombian artist who uses broken furniture and found materials to create works that explore themes of collective memory, violence and loss. One of his most famous works is “Untitled” (2003), an installation that uses a multitude of broken chairs to represent victims of violence in Colombia.
This work presented at the Istanbul Biennale in 2003, presents around 1500 chairs inserted between two sections of exterior walls.

Tadashi Kawamata is a Japanese artist who uses found furniture and building materials to create temporary structures in public space. Famous for his site-specific installations that transform urban and architectural spaces into immersive works of art, he creates ephemeral structures that dialogue with their environment, questioning notions of habitat, community and collective memory. His work, at the crossroads of art and architecture, invites us to reconsider our relationship with space and the elements that make up our daily lives.

One of his most famous works featuring furniture is “Chairs for Abu Dhabi” (2012). In this installation, Kawamata stacked hundreds of wooden chairs chaotically to form a monumental, organic structure. Exhibited at the Saadiyat Island exhibition in Abu Dhabi, this work questioned the notions of community, encounter, and the accumulation of ordinary objects to create an installation of great visual power. The chairs, symbols of rest and gathering, were here transformed into a complex, almost living sculpture, engaging the viewer to reflect on the use and symbolism of everyday objects.
We can also mention his “Nest” series. In this series, Kawamata creates structures reminiscent of giant nests, often made with wooden chairs, which cling to the facades of buildings, are installed in trees or are integrated into existing structures in urban space. This series has been presented in several cities around the world, including Paris, New York, and Tokyo.

Rune Guneriussen is a Norwegian contemporary artist who uses furniture as a material to create installations in natural space. He uses found furniture such as chairs, tables and lamps to create works that question the relationship between man and nature.
He often uses old or worn furniture, placing it in wild or isolated places, such as in forests, mountains or rivers, thus creating a kind of contrast between modern objects and the natural environment. He also plays with light, using lamps to illuminate his installations at night, creating magical and surreal scenes.
His works are often photographed and sometimes filmed to share with a wider audience, and they have been exhibited in many countries around the world. His works invite people to question the relationship between man and nature, sustainability and the human presence in the environment.

“The Dinner Party” (1974-1979) by Judy Chicago, which is an installation that uses a triangle-shaped table to represent the history of women in art history. The table is covered in porcelain and ceramics, and is decorated with the names of famous women.

One and Three Chairs by Joseph Kosuth (1945, United States) is a work dating from 1965, emblematic of the conceptual art movement. It belongs to the One and Three series, which Joseph Kosuth began in 1965 (he was born in 1945). This piece consists of three elements: a physical chair, a photograph of this same chair, and a text explaining the definition of the chair. The work explores the relationships between the object, its image and its concept, thus questioning the nature of representation and perception. By comparing these three forms of the chair, Kosuth invites us to reflect on the way in which we understand and interpret the objects around us, highlighting the distance between reality, image and intellectual definition.

Fat Chair. 1964–85, de Joseph Beuys.
“Fat Chair” is an iconic work by German artist Joseph Beuys, created between 1964 and 1985. It depicts an ordinary chair covered in fat, a material often used by Beuys in his work. This choice of material is deeply symbolic: for Beuys, fat symbolized human warmth, vital energy, and the capacity for transformation.
The work embodies Beuys’ artistic approach, which sought to reinvent the role of art and the artist in society. By using organic materials and creating simple but powerful forms, Beuys asked questions about the relationships between the object, the human and its environment. The fat, malleable and changing, contrasts with the rigidity of the chair, suggesting an interaction between the body and the object, between matter and the spirit.

Waiting Rooms and Offices (2003) d’Adrienne Spier

Space Invaders II (2022) by Guillaume La Brie

All of these artists use furniture as raw material to create works that invite visitors to question the function and meaning of these objects in their daily lives. Through unexpected transformations or revisited contexts, they provoke reflection on human interactions and perceptions of space, highlighting the way in which everyday objects can reveal deep layers of meaning and emotion.
